LeaderChat 2022

Session 9.3: Richard Montañez | #3

11/6/2020

Act like an owner.

Richard’s success would have never come without the revelation and permission to act like an owner. No matter where you’re seated in your organization, voice your revelations and ideas. You never know where they might lead with the right people listening.
  • How can we as leaders empower those around us to 'act like an owner'?
  • How often do we only see the barriers (as opposed to the opportunities) to voicing our revelations and ideas? What are some examples?
  • What does it mean to you to 'act like an owner'?

This topic hit home with me a bit. I had a similar opportunity in the past. I just became a manager in my department and was asked to go and research a project. After I collected the results, I was invited into a meeting with all of the executives of the meeting. I was the low man on the totem pole for sure. During the meeting the CEO looks at me and says "Alright Joe, what would you do if you were in my shoes?" I about froze, then I looked up and said "Well, first I would give Joe a raise. Then I would educate the associates and automate the process." After a little back and forth, the CEO taps the desk and says "Well, that is what we are going to do". There was plenty of skepticism, but I spoke up and we still use this process today.

We have to build up those that we lead to give them the courage to act like owners. Highlight their strengths, comment on their good work, give them incentives. My favorite part of my job is when I get text messages from teachers after hours that are excited about the work they accomplished because of the confidence I helped them build to pursue ambitions they might not have otherwise. I gave them the confidence to "act like an owner" by simply encouraging and empowering them to be the best they can be.

Acting like an owner means taking ownership of things that may not have originally been your idea or job, but you take it, put your spin on it, own it, and do it to the best of your ability.
