Session 9.2: Richard Montañez | #2

11/7/2020

Leave a legacy.

When Richard landed his janitor job at Frito-Lay, his grandfather reminded him of the importance of leaving a legacy in all you do. “When you mop that floor, you make sure that it shines so that when people see it they know that a Montañez mopped it,” his grandfather told him. From that point on, everything Richard did was about his last name—his legacy.
  • What are some key drivers for you personally and professionally?
  • What impact did Richard's grandfather have as a mentor to Richard? Do you have a mentor who played a vital role in your development?
  • What will be your legacy?

Key drivers for me personally and professionally are making a difference in the world and impacting individuals for the better. When I switched roles from directly impacting and teaching students to the admin role I am in now, I struggled a bit to find my purpose because I thrive in an environment where I directly impact and help develop people. But I quickly realized that my new role gave me the opportunity to impact and empower teachers and other CTE Coordinators across the state. So I pivoted my focus and previous goals to form new strategies to positively impact people and our education system on a large scale.

"People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But people will never forget how you made them feel" - Maya Angelou. I want to leave a legacy of leaving people feeling better than when I found them. My goal is to not focus on my actions being noticed. If I am truly effective, my actions will be felt. Additionally, I want to instill good virtues in my son so that he goes on in the world to become a good human being and impact others positively.
