LeaderChat 2022

Session 8.2: Earvin "Magic" Johnson | #2

10/31/2020

Lean on your team to win.

On the court, Magic could control the outcomes—the ball was in his hand. But, as leaders, we don’t have that much control. We rely on others to win. Understand you can’t control what happens on the court, but you can come up with the right strategy and have the right people in place to execute on it.
  • How can we empower our teams to lead and execute our strategy?
  • If you've ever read Good to Great, one of the keys to great companies is this concept of getting the right people on the bus, in the right seat for them, and all moving together in the right direction. How can we lead those on our teams 'buy-in' and execute on the strategy of the organization?
  • What are some tips you use or have seen from leaders who rely on their team(s) to win?

Know when to move on.

If you aren’t excited to go to work every day, it may be time to step down to let someone else bring the fire and passion for the work you do.
  • This is sometimes a hard conversation. Have you ever had an experience in your career where you recognized the need for a change? What were some of the signs that it was time to move on?
  • Have you ever noticed this with a team member or someone you were leading? What does this conversation look like from a management perspective?

Teamwork is huge. I am fully aware that I cannot accomplish all of our department goals on my own. The success of my students depends on our whole team to provide them with excellent support. If your goals align with the goal of your teammates, it's very easy to get that "buy-in". It also requires a little bit of selling. Like he mentioned in the video, when he approached Lebron he came to him with exactly what he needed to get him on board. You have to know what is important to your teammates and allow them to bring their strengths to the table.

Knowing when to move in is a different story. In most cases, we are providing a service or support to some portion of the community. If you don't love what you do, you aren't providing the best service. It takes passion to really push that work to the next level. We breifly discussed this a couple weeks ago on the live discussion. You have to know when to walk away, or when to let someone else walk away. I worked in the insurance industry for a short time doing sales. I'm not a salesperson, at all. After a month on the job, my sales quota was not where it needed to be. In a job that bases pay off commission, it was not doing me or the agency any good by being there. My boss and I agreed that it was not a good fit for me. I walked about and found something much more suited for me!

How can we empower our teams to lead and execute our strategy?
I empower my team by involving them in the planning process as often as I can. I have found it I present the problem to them they can normally find a feasible manner to accomplish the goal. Usually the process they find is more realistic and allows them to actually complete the task. They are the ones on the front line doing it every day so giving them the empowerment to have a say in how it is done goes a long way.
