Session 4.4: Sangram Vajre #4

10/1/2020

Put kindness above everything else.

Kindness sounds soft, but it’s actually the one thing you should double down on because it is a basic human need, says Sangram. The positive disruptors of this world are the ones who put people first.

Focus on never burning bridges. You can disagree with someone on one topic but they may be a great resource to have on a different topic. Be kind to those around you and stay committed to your vision and having that Belongship with your community.

Kindness is an essential part of being a great leader. If you lead with kindness and understanding, everything else usually falls into place.

I believe kindness is one of the most powerful tools of leadership and often one that is missing. Kindness is contagious, and when a leader demonstrates kindness it will spread.

That's a really good point. We often here that the organization is a representation of its leadership. If the leader is kind, those under them will follow suit.

Showing kindness is an important part of being a leader. It is also perceived as a harder thing to do, especially when you have some behaviors that need to be addressed with your team. One thing that we do is to show empathy when our team members are going through something in their personal lives. For example, one of the employees has a family member in the hospital for an unplanned visit. They are more worried about whether they will get in trouble for not coming to the office. We handle such instances by ensuring them that they are fine and they should focus on taking care of their family first. Another example is when one of our employees was admitted to the hospital, we went to the hospital and sat with their spouse until they were able to go back and see them. This goes a long, long way with the employees and shows them that you care about them.
