LeaderChat 2022

Session 3.1: Matt Wallaert #1

9/27/2020

Remove inhibiting pressures.

When inhibiting pressures aren’t a factor, people will behave differently. For example, Matt shares that women don’t shy away from asking for raises because they don’t want them. Really, it’s due to the inhibiting pressures that come with them (such as women being less likely to get raises and being socialized not to ask). When those pressures are removed, women are more likely to ask for raises.

I feel like this is something we all already know. By removing negative or inhibiting pressures, it would make sense that it would be easier to partake in that behavior. If there were no consequences for crimes, people would be more influenced to partake in criminal activity. If people were not so worried about judgement or rude remarks, they would be more likely to speak up or speak in front of people.

I think this could be the hardest thing to change though. In the example about womens pay, its easy to provide them information and a letter to help them ask for that raise. But in other scenarios, it might not be so simple to remove those inhibiting pressures.

I agree, Brittany. This is a very hard thing to change because for some of us it was ingrained in us. It's not just women either- men experience this, too. Imagine a man who's wife has a good paying job, so he stays home to watch their kids. A lot of people will assume he is uneducated, unmotivated, or not being the provider. But if he was a woman- it would just be accepted and no one would raise an eyebrow. We call them "Mr. Mom"- when really they're trying their best to remove those inhibiting pressures placed upon them and just trying to be the best parent and partner they can.
The same goes for work. If you're feeling like your job doesn't matter, you're not going to put forth the effort, you're not going to be invested, and your job performance will suffer. It takes courage and support to know that you're contributing and you're worth the effort, the raise, the promotion, etc.. Being supportive and encouraging people to be the best they can be is the best way to remove those negative pressures. If people believe in themselves, they believe they are worthy of that raise and will be more likely to ask for it.

I had never heard of the website he mentioned to help women with the knowledge and confidence to ask. Very impressive and encouraging to hear an average of $8k in raises for each one.

I'm thinking we should apply some of these practices to our Small Biz Connection committee through the Chamber. When there's events, there's a stigma that it's for Chamber investors only. The group's mission is to be inclusive of all small businesses, but I think we do a poor job of messaging and inviting non-chamber investors. (Similar to the men not attending woman's leadership events)

I just realized I had my pressures backwards. The above comments about the Small Biz Connection should actually be under adding promoting pressures.
