Develop your interests. You can't get great at something without being obsessed with it.

What's something you find yourself obsessed/passionate about?
Who or what organization in our community do you see embodying this main point?

Practice deliberately. Break the work down into smaller pieces so that you can focus with intent.

Do you find it easy to focus and block out distractions?
If you're passionate or feel successful at this main point, share some of your success in this area. What advice or encouragement would you give others?
What comments would you make about seeking feedback? What does this look like in your life?

I have had trouble in the past maintaining focus on certain tasks while frequently being interrupted. With that being said, I believe that in my new position as the Northark recruiter, I will have more distractions than ever before. This position can be used as an opportunity for me to learn new ways to better block out diversions as they come.

I believe that one of the main ways I have been successful at prioritizing my focus is by setting manageable weekly goals for myself, and not overwhelming myself with unrealistic expectations. My advice would be to do this: each Friday, at the end of the work day, take about half an hour to go over everything you've gotten done in that week and then from there, develop various goals for yourself for the following based upon what all you were able to complete that week + what you've coming up in the week to come! And sticky notes... sticky notes are life savers for me! Get different colors, too! Color coating things may seem juvenile, but it really works!

I am always eager to seek out feedback, especially from those who have had the same responsibilities in the past. I believe its important to receive criticism from others, both good and bad. What you do with it is entirely up to you!

I love the process of setting goals week to week. We've started implementing a version of this in our internal Chamber meetings. Analyzing the week and setting our goals to "move the needle" towards our quarterly and annual program of work in the community.

I color code all my my digital calendars to help me distinguish between personal, work, and community events that I need to be aware of. If color coding is wrong, I don't want to be right.

Thanks for sharing Savannah!

I find myself obsessed with helping people. I do it in every avenue in my life, which can often be draining, but it is still my compassion. The organization that I currently work for is also "obsessed" with helping our community members. They embody this main point by looking at every angle and statistical outcome possible, and addressing it. Their goal is to wrap around the individual to empower the community as a whole.

I actually struggle quite a lot with blocking out distractions. I have a busy schedule filled with full time employment, full time college, being the primary parent, and taking care of my grandfather after my grandmother passed away. My mind is always racing about one topic or the next. What I have been able to do to help myself be more successfully productive, is as simple as using the calendars on my phone. I enter every task into my calendar with time reminders to keep myself on track. As Savannah mentioned, I also color code the entries so that I know if it's work, home, or school related. I also use SMART goals, taught to me by the company I work for. Like stated in the video, you take one large goal and break it down into smaller steps and practice until you reach the end.

I think feedback is especially important for myself. Since I do struggle with keeping distractions at bay, feedback is a great way for information I missed to be discovered. A fresh, second set of eyes can make the world of difference when you're stuck or uncertain. The opinions of others may completely open up a new view for you, as long as their feedback is constructive.

I would agree with your organizations focus and that seemed pretty clear in the level of preparation you brought to project discussion with BCLI yesterday. Thank you for that!

Love the color coding.

Like Ferrin, I also find my obsession in helping people. I want to make sure they're taken care of at all times. I think what helps with that too is i'm also surrounded by like minded people at my company. From the leadership down, it is instilled to take care of our clients first, and to always make decisions for the good of the people we help.

On the flip side of that though, in my profession, time away from your phone is far and few between. So while I need to be on my phone to help people when those questions come in, it also makes the pathway for distractions very wide. Every ounce of my life is connected through a cell phone, so while I may get on to check an email, it is veryyyy easy to get side tracked.

Lastly, I think feedback is essential! The more eyes and opinions you can get on your work, the better. You don't have to apply all of it, but seeing it through different eyes helps. Now with that being said, I think everyone processes and responds to feedback differently, so there are better ways to go about it than some. A way I use feedback in my everyday work is when I have a listing I will usually get a group of agents at my office to go view the listing. Once there, I walk them through my thought process on what I highlight in marketing, how I determined the price, and any foreseeable challenges. They then tell me what they agree on, what they would do differently, or even share similar experiences that might help.

The phone comments are resonating with me. Being tied to your phone for business can easily slide into non-productive work and it takes a significant amount of discipline to focus up! It's a constant battle and I don't think we're alone at all.

Thanks for sharing Tyra!
