Education

The Harrison School District's high student achievement, as measured by state and national assessments, is a reflection of the District's professional and highly qualified staff, supportive parental involvement and an involved and proud local community. Harrison High School students' composite score on the ACT is 22.6 as compared to a 21.6 national average. Seventy-five percent of the students that graduate from Harrison High School continue to further their education at various institutions across America. The goal to Inspire Life-Long Learners reflects the District's interest in the whole child as well as his/her achievement.

K-12 Education
The City of Harrison provides public education with 10 schools, private schooling and an accredited two year college. The Harrison School District has an enrollment of 2,935 students. The district employs 470 individuals – 370 certified and 163 classified employees. The districts' financial budget is financed partially by a school millage rate of 34.3 mills. The millage rate ranks the district near the average of the 310 districts in Arkansas. Teacher and administrator salaries in the district are competitive with those of surrounding educational institutions.

The district maintains five elementary schools, one middle school, two secondary schools, three alternative schools, an administration building, and the transportation/maintenance shop. The new Harrison Middle School, designed with a cafeteria to seat 672 students, was completed in 2004. At a total cost of .25 million, the building provides 88,000 square feet of space for fifth and sixth grade students.

The district's media centers, guidance and counseling programs, and special education and gifted education programs are all vital areas operating at quality levels. The district operates approximately 750 computer systems maintained by on efull time technology specialist. All classrooms and labs are connected to the Internet.

Two school nurses coordinate all health services and health screenings which consist of vision, hearing, and dental as well as scoliosis testing.

The districts' four K-4 elementary schools are Woodland Heights, Eagle Heights, Skyline Heights, and Forest Heights which have a total of 1,033 students. Approximately 465 fifth and sixth grade students are housed on the campus of Harrison Middle School. There are 674 students in the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades, and 627 students in the high school.

There are several private schools in the area. Private schools include Montessori, Grace Christian School, Hillcrest Christian School, and Seventh-Day Adventist Church School just to mention a few.

North Arkansas College

Boone County is especially proud of its comprehensive, public community college, North Arkansas College. Northark offers transfer and technical degree programs, one-year technical certificates, certificates of proficiency, customized business and industry training, adult basic education (GED) classes, and non-credit community education courses. The institution is especially proud of its leadership in the use of educational technology, in community outreach and partnerships, and in health education. Allied health students make up almost one-third of North Arkansas College graduates. North Arkansas College is a leader in training for information technology and web design. The college was among the first in the state to develop a web page; provide Internet access to all faculty, staff, and students; offer on-line courses; and become a regional training center for Cisco Systems. Faculty and students enjoy high speed, fiber optic, networked computer labs and classrooms in the John Paul Hammerschmidt Business and Conference Center. Using interactive television, Northark offers college classes to area high schools. Residents are also offered an opportunity to complete bachelor’s degree programs on campus in Harrison through partnerships with four-year universities. For university transfer, workforce development, information technology, healthcare education, and cultural events, residents of northern Arkansas “Think Northark First.”
